I've always used the wardrobe/closet. buy some cheap duvets and stick them to each reflective surface.
Or if you don't have a closet to hand then at the very least make sure you have a duvet/soundproofing behind the singer to catch the reflections.
Try positioning the mic at different places in the room to get the brightest take. its all a bit trial and error but you can save some money and get very good results using these methods.
